1 Comment Topics: Buyer Tips

Great RoomA great room is an area within a home which combines functions of other more traditional rooms, such as the family room, the living room, and the study. The advantage of a great room over a more traditional room is flexibility. Most homeowners get little use from their living rooms and dining rooms. A great room in combination with a large kitchen can offer you a flexible area for entertaining and daily family life.

Great rooms are usually rather large rooms, normally 10% to 15% of the total square footage of the home. Great rooms tend to be rather large rooms, typically comprising 10% to 15% of the total square footage of the home. For example, a great room in a 4,000 square foot home might be 550 to 600 square feet. Great rooms often have a second story ceiling with open upstairs skywalks overlooking the great room.

Most great rooms are found on the lower level of American multi-story homes built in the second half of the twentieth century. Although not extremely common in Miami and the South Florida area, great rooms are definitely gaining in popularity among new home developments.
